Threats to America

During a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives, we learned more about potential threats to America. But those threats differed based upon the political party of the member of Congress.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government focused on the influence of Sharia and is chaired by Representative Chip Roy. He also put together a Sharia-Free America Caucus that now includes 38 members from 18 states.

One of the witnesses was Robert Spencer, who has written extensively about the threat from radical Islam. In the hearing, he provided examples of how Sharia policies have been implemented in the U.K. In that country, Sharia courts have collided with the British judicial system.

The response from many of the Democratic members of the subcommittee was to label the discussion unnecessary. Instead, they decided to pivot the discussion to what they believe is a threat to America: Christian nationalism.

Representative Brandon Gill cited surveys showing that 39 percent of Muslims believe Sharia law should be implemented in this country. He cited another poll that showed that nearly the same percentage believe Islam should be declared as the national religion. These statistics were met with snickers from Democrats on the committee.

Representative Glenn Grothman said he often interacts with conservative Christian groups in the Midwest and has “yet to find one person who is a self-avowed, or even un-self-avowed, Christian nationalist.” He went on to say that “Democrats keep talking about these mystery people.”

This hearing once again illustrates that we may live in the same country, but the members of those political parties live in different worlds.viewpoints new web version
