Same-Sex Marriage
Kerby Anderson
Last Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided not to revisit its previous decision that legalized same-sex marriage. Although there was a suggestion by Justice Clarence Thomas that the justices “should reconsider” past rulings about same-sex relationships and same-sex marriage, few believed that would occur.
The case that the court rejected was an appeal from Kim Davis, a former Kentucky country clerk who did not want to issue same-sex marriages licenses. As you may remember, she was found in contempt and spent a few days in jail.
The fact that she was fired was a preview of what was to come. There was no religious accommodation for her religious beliefs. One day she was issuing licenses based on thousands of years of history that defined marriage as one man and one woman. Then five Supreme court justices (as described by Chief Justice John Roberts) “ordered every state to change their definition of marriage.”
We were told at the time that all gay couples wanted was equality. Many drove around with a bumper sticker with an “equals sign.” We quickly learned that there was no “live and let live philosophy” after the Supreme Court decision. And we quickly learned that once you can redefine marriage, you can also redefine gender and promote transgender rights.
There are many good secular and biblical reasons not to have legalized same-sex marriage, but it is the law of the land now. It’s doubtful this Supreme Court decision will be reversed any time soon. That is why I wrote the booklet on “A Biblical View on Same-Sex Marriage” so that you would have something to teach your children and grandchildren who are growing up in a society affirming same-sex marriage.
The first step would be to teach what the Bible taught about marriage (Genesis 2:18-25) and what Jesus taught about marriage (Matthew 19:3–6).
