Roberts' Dissent

Written by admin July 3 - 2015
Last Friday morning the Supreme Court announced its decision. It found a sweeping “right” to same-sex marriage nationwide, in every state, even those whose laws specify otherwise. The White House reflected the celebratory atmosphere the gay community carried out all day. Friday evening, the rainbow colors, emblematic of the mainstreaming of the homosexual lifestyle, were projected onto its north face. When you get a bad decision from the Supreme Court, it’s worth reading the dissenting opinion. In this case, each of the four dissenting justices wrote his own. All lamented the damage the ruling does to democracy. The dissenters agreed, the question in this case was not whether same-sex marriage is a good idea, but who should decide. It should not have been the Court, but the people and their elected legislators. Justice Roberts, for the first time in his tenure, read part of his dissent from the bench. In it are these strong words: “If you are among the many Americans — of whatever sexual orientation — who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.” He spoke of the sheer arrogance of the ruling, saying: “The Court invalidates the marriage laws of more than half the states and orders the transformation of a social institution that has formed the basis of human society for millennia. For the Kalahari Bushmen and the Han Chinese, the Carthaginians, and the Aztecs. Just who do we think we are?” The Family Research Council sees the decision, not as the end of an era that defined marriage biblically, but as the impetus for a movement that began back when that definition began to be questioned. FRC’s Update that Friday evening read: “Just as Americans refused to accept the Court’s decision on abortion 42 years [ago] as legitimate, they will not accept this one.” The homosexual community’s accumulation of privileges and stature in the culture has been used as a weapon to force affirmation of the lifestyle. This decision giving them marriage portends an acceleration of challenges to the freedom to believe in God’s plan for marriage. Dark days are ahead for those who stand and act upon God’s truth. But, think about it. God has always been present with those who speak and live His truth in hostile cultures. Do believers suffer? Oh yes, and we may. Millions of Americans do not agree with this decision. Some will acquiesce to a new consensus and watch the diminishing of the great good marriage is to a society. Others will never accept the decision. They will not deny Biblical truth or change their position on sexual sin because of a court decision. This decision is evil. God is with those who oppose it. viewpoints_horizontal_penna
