Pause from Afghanistan
Kerby Anderson
President Trump announced his desire to pause migration from Afghanistan until he is satisfied that migrants from that country and other unstable countries have been thoroughly investigated. His comment came after the shooting of two National Guard members. But this is not just a knee-jerk reaction. There are some concerning issues.
President Biden declared that American withdrawal from Afghanistan should be completed by September 11, 2021, which would have been the 20th anniversary of the 9-11 attack. One of America’s worst security incidents took place days before (August 26, 2021) when a suicide bomber killed 13 US service members, wounded 18 others, and killed approximately 170 Afghans with at least 200 or more wounded.
We were assured that migrants from Afghanistan were properly vetted by the government. Columnist Terry Jeffrey points to a recent report warning that the “Department of Homeland Security encountered obstacles to screen, vet, and inspect evacuees arriving as part of Operation Allies Refuges (OAR)/Operation Allies Welcome (OAW).” The report concluded “DHS may have admitted or paroled individuals into the United States who pose a risk to national security and the safety of local communities.”
Lest you think the shooting in November was an isolated incident, Terry Jeffery provides other stories of incidents from other Afghanistan nationals who were brought to this country. Cal Thomas reminds us that the November shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire, a statement often used by terrorists.
We need to reevaluate the procedures that brought Afghans into this country. The safety of our country depends upon it.
