Edward Klein is a well-known editor, writer and public speaker with a distinguished career in American journalism. After serving an apprenticeship as a copy boy for the New York Daily News, he went on to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, which awarded him a traveling fellowship to Japan. There, he learned to speak Japanese and traveled throughout Asia as a foreign correspondent for United Press International. Upon his return to New York, he joined Newsweek, where he became foreign editor and then assistant managing editor with jurisdiction over foreign and military affairs. From Newsweek, he joined The New York Times. As editor in chief of The New York Times Magazine, he led this flagship publication of the Sunday Times to new heights of public interest and editorial excellence. During his editorship, The New York Times Magazine won the first Pulitzer Prize in its history. Since leaving The Times, Edward Klein has written many articles for Vanity Fair and other national magazines. For Parade, he wrote “Walter Scott’s Personality Parade,” the most widely read column in the English language. His nonfiction books have all appeared on The New York Times Best Seller List. They include: The Truth About Hillary; Katie: The Real Story; Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died; The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House; and Blood Feud: The Clintons Vs. The Obamas. James Chen is the Executive Director at the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE). James first joined IGE in 2011, serving as a Program Officer and the Vice President for Programs before assuming his current role. His work for IGE in engaging both government and civil society has taken him to northern Iraq, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nepal, and Singapore. Prior to joining IGE, he was a Research Associate and Academic Resources Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Near East South Asia (NESA) Center for Strategic Studies. James provided research support for the U.S. government’s engagement of national security officials from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. He also authored a report on the political, economic, military, and soft power aspects of Chinese influence in the region. Prior to his time at the NESA Center, James worked in Taiwan for over seven years at Overseas Radio & Television (ORTV), a non-profit Christian media organization based in Taipei. James also served for a year in the Republic of China (Taiwan) Army. James’ writings have been published in Strategic Forum (National Defense University), The Diplomat, and The Review of Faith & International Affairs. James has a Master’s degree in International Relations and Security from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He speaks Mandarin and Taiwanese. James, a native of Flushing, NY, now resides in Northern Virginia with his wife and two sons.
