Emily Flaming started at John Brown University in fall 2022—the same year ChatGPT burst on the scene. Lots of people were talking about the AI chatbot, but Flaming didn’t know how—or if—she should be using it. “It felt like a very scary thing,” she said. Flaming, who is working on her education degree, didn’t really understand the program, and she didn’t want to use it the wrong way. Now, 3½ years later, Flaming is among the first generation of young teachers receiving their diplomas in a world where generative AI tools are fast becoming near-ubiquitous.
