Our “Lying Eyes”

In a recent on-camera interview at the White House, President Biden told a group of young people he had “just signed a law” that would forgive large chunks of student debt. “It’s passed,” the president said. “I got it passed by a vote or two and it’s in effect.” This may have appealed to many of the young people assembled. But it’s not true.

Congress did not pass any such law. The president issued an executive order transferring massive amounts of student debt to taxpayers. This action is unconstitutional and is now being challenged in court.

A few days later, in a speech he delivered in Syracuse, New York, President Biden received applause when he stated: “Today, the most common price of gas in America is $3.39 – down from over $5 when I took office.”

Trouble is, the most common price for a gallon of regular gas on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2021, was $2.39 per gallon. Was this a gaffe? That’s doubtful. The president was reading from a teleprompter.

Then there were the debate-night lies: Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer waved off her opponent’s criticism of her draconian coronavirus policies, stating that Michigan “kids were out for three months.” Washington Post columnist Marc Theissen points out that it was not until December 2020 that the Whitmer administration “finally allowed — not required — schools to open for in-person learning.”

Marc Theissen wondered: Did the governor think Michigan parents didn’t notice how long “their kids were home doing online school?”

In the debate between New York gubernatorial candidates, Governor Kathy Hochul dismissed her opponent Lee Zeldin’s concerns about the state’s crime surge, stating, "I don't know why that's so important to you." Her party’s contention that the state’s crime stats are lower than they were decades ago rings hollow as current trend lines head in the wrong direction.

It's frustrating. These politicians seem to be asking voters: “Who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?” penna's vp small
