Gary Bauer wrote a column with the provocative title, “Jesus Wasn’t a Socialist.” He explained, “There is a growing effort by political forces on the Left to convince Christians that socialism and its father Marxism are closely aligned with the teachings of Jesus. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

He reminds us that Marxism is about much more than economics. I discovered that in graduate school when reading assigned texts written by Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. Marxism is a worldview that affects every area of life.

For example, “socialist parties and left-wing parties across Western Europe and here in the US are radically pro-abortion. The Democrat Party in the United States is the home of most socialists and is totally devoted to abortion on demand for any reason.”

He adds that, “Socialist movements here and across Western Europe are also fully committed to LGBTQ ideology. Socialist Democrats promote that ideology in schools.” He also warns that, “Socialists and Marxists believe the state should have the authority over children, not parents.”

At its core, Marxism is atheistic. That is one reason why, “Religious liberty also suffers under socialist and left-wing governments.” As one of my regular radio guests explains, the state must be supreme according to Marxists. They cannot allow citizens to believe that God, the church, or the family are more important than the state.

Gary Bauer concludes by noting that, “Nowhere in the Gospels does Christ advocate for big government to take money and assets from one group of people and give it to another group.” We are to be generous and give to the poor, but that does not justify building a large governmental bureaucracy.
