Biblical Worldview
Kerby Anderson
George Barna has been doing surveys of American attitudes for decades. After all these surveys, he has found that tens of thousands of adults have some elements of inconsistent thinking blended into their worldview. He therefore has concluded that there are seven key cornerstones of a biblical worldview.
Cornerstone #1 is a belief in an orthodox, biblical understanding of God. Lots of Americans say they believe in God, but if you ask specific questions, you discover only half believe in the God of the Bible.
Cornerstone #2 is that all human beings are sinful by nature. Every choice we make has moral considerations and consequences. Cornerstone #3 is the acknowledgement that the consequences of our sin can only be forgiven and eliminated through Jesus Christ.
Cornerstone #4 is a belief that the Bible is true, reliable, and relevant. It provides the best moral guide for every person, in all situations. Cornerstone #5 is that absolute truth exists. All truths are defined by God, prescribed in the Bible, and unchanging across time and cultures.
Cornerstone #6 is the understanding that the ultimate purpose of human life is to know, love, and serve God with all your heart, mind, strength, and soul. Cornerstone #7 is the reality that success on earth is best understood as consistent obedience to God, in thoughts, words, and actions.
As you hear this list, you are probably thinking that this is Sunday School 101. Yet, George Barna has found that only three percent of adults currently adopt all seven cornerstones for their life. And the younger you are the less likely you are to embrace all seven.
If you are a pastor or Sunday School teacher, I encourage you to follow the link to this material and teach it to others.
